Dubai's winter season: why some attractions only open in the cooler months

In Dubai, winter is the high season. From roughly October to April the heat eases, evenings become pleasant and the city moves outdoors. It is also when a whole group of attractions opens its doors: outdoor parks, gardens and festivals that close or slow down in the summer because the heat makes them impractical.

That creates a simple rule for planning: if your trip falls in the cooler months, you have many more options than a summer traveller, but you also share them with the busiest crowds of the year. Knowing what opens when, and how to check the dates, is what makes the difference between a relaxed trip and long queues.

This guide covers the main seasonal attractions, the winter festivals and the outdoor experiences that are at their best in this period. For the seasons in general, read our guide to the best time to visit Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Dubai seasonal attractions at a glance

Seasonal attractions announce their dates each year, and they are not always the same. The table shows what we know from official sources; where there is no date, check the official website before you plan around it.

Global Village Dubai: dates, what to expect and when to go

Global Village is the symbol of Dubai's winter. It is an open-air destination of pavilions from countries around the world, where the evening is about wandering, eating and browsing for souvenirs rather than queuing for rides. It works for every age, from toddlers to grandparents.

It opens every year in the cooler months. Its 30th season ran from 15 October 2025 to 10 May 2026, according to the Dubai Media Office. The next seasons follow the same pattern, but the exact opening and closing dates are announced each year, so check them on the official channels before you travel.

Go in the evening, when the temperature drops and the lights come on, and plan on several hours. Weekends are the busiest, so a weekday visit is calmer. Our guide to Dubai theme parks and water parks explains how Global Village compares with the other parks.

Dubai Shopping Festival: winter deals and events across the city

The Dubai Shopping Festival, known as DSF, is the city's big winter festival. Its 31st edition ran from 5 December 2025 to 11 January 2026, with promotions across the malls, events and entertainment throughout the city. It takes place every year around the same period, but the dates change, so check the next edition on Visit Dubai before you book.

If you plan to shop, DSF is the best time to do it. Combine it with the tourist VAT refund, explained in our guide to the best places to shop in Dubai, and you can make the most of the purchases you were planning anyway.

Remember that DSF coincides with the Christmas and New Year holidays, the busiest weeks of the year in Dubai. Hotels, restaurants and attractions fill up, so book early and expect more people everywhere.

Dubai Miracle Garden and Dubai Butterfly Garden: when they open

Dubai Miracle Garden is a favourite winter outing for families and photographers, with flowers arranged into giant displays such as hearts, arches and even a castle. Dubai Butterfly Garden, in the same area, is a quieter visit centred on butterflies, and children usually love it. Both are in Al Barsha South, and there is a combined option to visit them together; allow one to two hours for each.

Both gardens open in the cooler season, but their exact opening and closing dates change every year and are announced by the gardens themselves. Before you plan your trip around them, check the dates on the official websites, especially if you are travelling at the very start or the very end of the season.

Go early in the morning or in the late afternoon, when the light is softer for photos and the temperature is more comfortable. Comfortable shoes and a hat help, as most of the Miracle Garden visit is outdoors.

Dubai Safari Park: a winter day out with the animals

Dubai Safari Park, in Al Warqa, is a wildlife park for families and animal lovers. It closes in the summer and reopens when the weather cools down, which makes it one of the classic winter plans for travellers with children.

Allow three to five hours, and book premium experiences in advance if you want them. Mornings are the best time to go, while the temperature is still pleasant and before the midday sun. Bring water, sunscreen and hats, even in winter, and plan a calm afternoon afterwards: after several hours on foot, younger children are usually ready for a rest at the hotel.

The reopening date changes every year, so confirm it on the official website before you plan the visit. Our guide to Dubai and Abu Dhabi with kids has more ideas for a family trip.

The desert, beaches and Hatta: the best of winter outdoors

Winter is when the Dubai desert is at its best. A desert safari in the afternoon, with sunset over the dunes, is far more comfortable in the cooler months, and our Dubai desert safari guide explains the options. For a special evening, a luxury dinner in the desert lasts about four hours, with the meal served under the stars.

Beaches are pleasant again, the Marina and JBR promenades fill with people in the evenings, and day trips such as Hatta, in the mountains, become an easy plan. It is also the season for hot air balloon flights at sunrise and boat trips on calm water; see our guides to seeing Dubai from the air and boat trips in Dubai.

Evenings in the desert can be surprisingly cool in December and January, so bring a light jacket or a scarf. Our guide on what to wear in Dubai and Abu Dhabi covers the details.

How to plan a winter trip to Dubai: dates, crowds and bookings

The cooler season is the busiest of the year, so planning ahead pays off. Book hotels, flights and the most popular experiences, such as desert dinners, balloon flights and sunset slots at the observation decks, as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for Christmas, New Year and school holidays.

For seasonal attractions, the key is to confirm the dates for your season. Global Village and DSF follow a regular pattern, but the exact dates are announced each year. Miracle Garden, Butterfly Garden and Dubai Safari Park also announce their own opening dates. If your trip falls at the very start or the very end of the cooler season, check carefully: an attraction that opens later or closes earlier than expected can change your plan.

If you are adding Abu Dhabi, winter is also ideal for the museums and the outdoor spaces of Saadiyat Island; our guide to the Saadiyat Cultural District museums covers the Louvre and the new museums. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is planned for the district, but its opening date has not been confirmed.

  • Check the season dates of Global Village and DSF for your year.
  • Confirm the opening dates of Miracle Garden, Butterfly Garden and Dubai Safari Park.
  • Book desert experiences and sunset slots early.
  • Pack a light jacket for desert evenings.
  • Spread evening attractions across the trip rather than stacking them.

How High Class organises your winter in Dubai

We start on WhatsApp by asking your dates and what you enjoy: festivals and shopping, gardens and wildlife, the desert, the beach or a mix. Then we check which seasonal attractions are open during your stay, using the official dates for that season, and suggest a plan that spreads them sensibly across the trip.

We book tickets and experiences early, which matters in the busiest weeks of the year, and arrange a car with a driver for each outing, including the evenings at Global Village and the desert dinners, so you do not have to worry about taxis or parking at peak times. For families or older travellers, we keep the pace easy, with afternoons free. Dates, hours and prices change, so we confirm everything for your stay before booking.

If you are travelling from the UK, the US or India

United Kingdom
The UAE is 4 hours ahead of the UK in winter, and Dubai's mild winter sun is exactly what many British travellers are looking for. October half-term, Christmas and February half-term are the busiest periods, so book hotels and desert experiences early. Check your entry requirements on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) and GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae) before you fly.
United States
With Dubai 8 or 9 hours ahead of the East Coast, plan the first evenings lightly and save Global Village for when you have adjusted to the time difference. Thanksgiving and the end-of-year holidays are popular times to travel, so book early. Check your entry requirements on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) or GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae) before booking.
India
Dubai is only an hour and a half behind India, so there is no real jet lag and an evening at Global Village on arrival day is realistic. Diwali and the winter holidays are peak periods, so book early. Visa on arrival applies only to Indian passport holders with a valid visa or residence permit from the countries listed by the UAE government; otherwise arrange an e-visa before travel. Always confirm the current rules on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) and GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae).
