Key takeaways

  • Yas Island in Abu Dhabi is home to Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld and SeaWorld, and the island itself is free to enter.
  • One theme park per day is the rule that saves the trip: children tire long before the ticket runs out.
  • From October to April you can mix parks, beaches and outdoor sightseeing; in summer, life moves indoors.
  • Height and age rules vary by ride: check each park's official site before buying tickets.
  • Children travelling without both parents may need written consent: sort the paperwork before you book flights.

Why the Emirates work so well for families

Few long-haul destinations are as easy with children as Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Hotels are built around families from the moment you check in, malls have baby-changing rooms and nursing spaces, transport is clean and predictable, and nobody blinks at a pushchair in a restaurant at nine in the evening. For parents used to juggling crowded cities, the sense of safety and order is a genuine relief.

What really sets the Emirates apart, though, is the sheer density of things to do. In a few days you can stand in front of a giant aquarium, ride a Ferrari-themed rollercoaster, meet Warner Bros. characters, spend a day at a water park and still finish on a calm, warm beach. That is also the trap: trying to fit it all in and flying home with exhausted children and parents in need of a holiday from the holiday.

This guide sets out what is worth your time in each city, how to handle the heat and the time difference, which ages suit which experiences and the documents you should not leave until the last minute.

Yas Island: your theme park day (or days) in Abu Dhabi

If you are travelling as a family, Yas Island deserves at least one day, often two. It sits on the eastern side of Abu Dhabi, close to Zayed International Airport, and the official Experience Abu Dhabi portal lists Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, Yas Mall and Yas Marina Circuit on the island. Getting onto the island is free; attractions, shows and experiences are ticketed.

Each park has a distinct personality, and choosing by your children's ages avoids tears at the gate. Ferrari World is a dream for speed and car fans, with headline coasters that draw teenagers, alongside gentler zones. Warner Bros. World is indoors, themed and full of familiar characters, which makes it ideal for younger children and the hottest days. Yas Waterworld is singled out on the official things-to-do-with-kids page for rides across different thrill levels and a dedicated children's area. SeaWorld Abu Dhabi focuses on marine life, with indoor environments and a slower, more absorbing pace.

As the day winds down, Yas Bay and Yas Marina are public areas for a stroll, dinner and the sunset, all free. It is the perfect spot for children to burn off their last bit of energy while the grown-ups sit down to eat.

The best family attractions in Dubai

Dubai offers so much that the hard part is choosing. Here are the attractions that work best with children, grouped by area so your driver is not crossing the city all day.

At The Dubai Mall, the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo and KidZania are under one roof. The aquarium captivates everyone from babies to grandparents; KidZania is a child-sized city where children role-play real jobs, and it can happily fill half a day. Check the recommended age range on its official site. When you leave the mall in the evening, the Dubai Fountain shows round off the day at no cost.

Further out, Dubai Safari Park in Al Warqa and Dubai Parks and Resorts in Jebel Ali, with Legoland, Legoland Water Park and Motiongate, each need a day of their own. On Palm Jumeirah, Atlantis Aquaventure World combines a water park with an aquarium. At Mall of the Emirates, Ski Dubai puts real snow in the middle of the desert, which is often the highlight for children who have never seen any.

  • The Dubai Mall: Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, KidZania and Dubai Ice Rink.
  • Mall of the Emirates: Ski Dubai.
  • Palm Jumeirah: Atlantis Aquaventure World.
  • Jebel Ali: Dubai Parks and Resorts (Legoland, Legoland Water Park, Motiongate).
  • Al Warqa: Dubai Safari Park, which runs a seasonal calendar, so check its reopening date before you plan around it.
  • Zabeel Park: Dubai Frame, with views over old and new Dubai.

Beaches with children: where the sea is on your side

The Gulf is usually calm and warm, which families love. In Dubai, JBR beach is the most convenient: a promenade, restaurants, toilets and, according to Visit Dubai, Splash Pad, an enclosed water park for children. Sunset Beach in Umm Suqeim is free, needs no booking and looks straight onto Burj Al Arab; it is also one of the quieter stretches of coast.

In Abu Dhabi, the Corniche has a beach, green spaces, a promenade and a cycle path, and pairs nicely with a morning at a museum. Saadiyat has pale sand and turquoise water, ideal if you are staying on the island.

Swimwear is fine on public beaches, but cover up when you leave the beach area. Pack UV swim tops for the children: the midday sun burns quickly, even in winter.

Heat, season and the rhythm of the day

Heat is the single biggest factor in a family trip. Visit Dubai describes October to April as the pleasant-weather season, with published monthly averages of 21°C in January, 24°C in December and March and 27°C in November. From May to September, averages rise from 31°C to 36°C, with July the hottest month.

That does not rule summer out. The Emirates have a huge number of covered, air-conditioned attractions, and Warner Bros. World, Ferrari World, the aquariums, Ski Dubai and KidZania all work perfectly well in July. What does not work is anything outdoors in the middle of the day. In the hot months, the ideal routine is out early, back to the hotel for lunch and a rest, and out again once the sun drops. Our guide to the best time to visit goes through the year month by month.

Whatever the season, a few habits make a real difference: water at all times, hats, sunscreen reapplied and breaks somewhere air-conditioned. The jump in temperature between the street and indoor spaces is big, so a light layer in the day bag saves a sniffly child.

November to MarchMildest, averages of 21°C to 27°CBeach, water park, desert and walking in the same trip

What is the best age to bring children?

There is no wrong age, but each stage gets something different from the trip. Babies travel well: long flights tire the parents more than them, and the facilities in malls and hotels make life much easier. At this stage, think aquarium, beach, pool and short outings, without the pressure of squeezing value out of a full-day park ticket.

From around four or five, the trip changes gear. Children remember more, cope with longer days and start to enjoy theme parks such as Warner Bros. World and the children's zones of the water parks. Between eight and twelve is the sweet spot for many families: plenty of curiosity, energy to spare and tall enough for a good share of the rides. Teenagers, meanwhile, will head straight for Ferrari World's coasters and the steepest slides.

Whatever their age, attractions set their own height, age and supervision rules, which differ ride by ride and can change. Check them on each park's official site before buying tickets, so you do not discover at the front of a queue that your child cannot ride.

Practical tips from people who live here

A few details never make it into the guidebooks, yet they shape a family trip:

  • Keep the first day after arrival light. Pool, beach and an early dinner help everyone reset their body clocks.
  • Alternate busy and quiet days: after a theme park, plan a beach morning and a free afternoon.
  • Book a child car seat in advance; a private driver with the right seat is far less stressful than hailing taxis.
  • Bring a light, foldable pushchair. Malls and parks are vast and little legs give up quickly.
  • On the Dubai Tram, RTA provides cabins reserved for women and children, handy for mothers travelling on their own with kids.
  • Restaurants welcome children late into the evening, but an early dinner avoids meltdowns and queues.
  • Pack spare clothes, snacks and the children's usual medicines, with prescriptions, in your hand luggage.

How High Class plans a family trip

Travelling with children needs an itinerary that respects everyone's sleep, appetite and stamina. That is how we work: Huda, from our local team, chats with you on WhatsApp to understand your children's ages, what each of them loves and the pace your family enjoys, then puts together a plan with one park per day, rest time at the hotel and gentler outings between the big days.

We arrange a private driver with child seats, park tickets and, where it helps, a guide for the cultural visits. Before buying anything, we check the age and height rules of each attraction for your dates. If you want to see both cities, our 6-night Dubai and Abu Dhabi itinerary is a good starting point, adjusted to your children's rhythm. Opening times, tickets and access rules change through the year, and we confirm everything before anything is booked.

If you are travelling from the UK, the US or India

United Kingdom
October half-term, Christmas, February half-term and the Easter holidays all fall in the comfortable season, which is why they are also the busiest and priciest weeks: book hotels and parks early. The long summer holiday lands in the hottest months, so plan it around indoor attractions and pool time. With the UAE 4 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 3 during British Summer Time, jet lag is gentle for children. If a child is travelling with only one parent or with another adult, carry a signed consent letter from the absent parent and check your airline's requirements. Confirm entry rules for every passport in the family on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) or GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae).
United States
Thanksgiving, winter break and spring break line up nicely with the mild season, while summer vacation means planning around indoor attractions. Dubai is 8 or 9 hours ahead of the East Coast and more from the West Coast, so give children two or three easy days before a full theme park day. If one parent is not travelling, a notarised consent letter from that parent is a sensible precaution, and your airline may ask for one. Check entry requirements for each family member on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) or GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae) before booking.
India
Short direct flights and a time difference of just an hour and a half make the Emirates one of the easiest family trips from India. The long summer break in May and June falls in the hottest stretch of the year, so lean on indoor parks and evening outings; Diwali and the winter holidays are ideal for beaches and Yas Island. On visas: visa on arrival is only for Indian passport holders who hold a valid visa or residence permit from the US, the UK, the EU or other countries listed by the UAE government. Otherwise, every family member, children included, needs an e-visa arranged before travel. Always confirm the current rules on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) and GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae).

Frequently asked questions

Is Dubai good for a family holiday with young children?

Yes. Hotels, malls and attractions are set up for families, the city is clean and orderly and there are plenty of indoor options for hot days. The main things to manage are the heat and the temptation to overschedule.

Which Yas Island theme park is best for younger children?

Warner Bros. World is indoors and full of familiar characters, which suits younger children well. Yas Waterworld has a dedicated children's area, according to the official portal. Check height and age rules on each park's website.

Do you have to pay to enter Yas Island?

No. According to the official Abu Dhabi portal, access to the island is free; parks, shows and experiences are ticketed. Yas Bay and Yas Marina are public areas.

When is the best time to visit Dubai with kids?

November to March is the mildest period, letting you combine beaches, parks and outdoor sightseeing. Summer still works if you build the trip around indoor attractions with outings early in the morning or in the evening.

Can we do Dubai and Abu Dhabi in one trip with children?

Yes, and it works well. Rather than day trips with small children, spend a few nights in each city so your Yas Island day does not start and end with hours on the road.

Does a child travelling with one parent need a consent letter for the UAE?

It is a sensible precaution. Carry a signed consent letter from the absent parent and check your airline's rules, then confirm current entry requirements on u.ae, ICP or GDRFA Dubai.

Can children go on a desert safari?

Yes, but the minimum age for dune bashing differs between operators. With young children, a morning safari or a gentle drive is usually the better choice.
