Shopping in Dubai: malls, souks and open-air streets
Dubai has a reputation as a shopping city, and it is deserved, but not always for the reasons people expect. The malls are vast and air-conditioned, with almost every international brand under one roof, and they double as entertainment venues with aquariums, ski slopes and cinemas. Prices on international brands are not always lower than at home. What makes shopping here special is the scale, the comfort in the heat and the contrast with the souks of old Dubai, where gold, spices and fabrics are still sold the traditional way.
The smartest approach is to think in three types of place. Mega malls for brands, air conditioning and an evening out. Open-air districts for a stroll when the weather is pleasant. And the souks for something you cannot find anywhere else, with a bit of bargaining involved.
This guide covers each type, explains when the big sales happen and walks you through the tourist VAT refund, which works well if you know the rules before you pay.

The Dubai Mall: what to know before you go
According to Visit Dubai, The Dubai Mall has more than 1,200 shops and a total area of about 1.1 million square metres. It is not just a mall: it houses the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, with its 10-million-litre tank and 48-metre tunnel, and the entrance to At the Top, the Burj Khalifa observation decks. Outside, on Burj Lake, the Dubai Fountain performs every 30 minutes in the evening.
Its size is both the attraction and the challenge. Walking from one end to the other takes a long time, and it is easy to lose an hour looking for a single shop. Use the mall's directories and app, pick two or three areas that interest you and leave the rest for another visit.
The mall connects to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station on the metro Red Line by a walkway; follow the signs. If you plan to see the tower, read our guide to the Burj Khalifa At the Top tour first, and leave the shopping for after the visit, because shopping bags have to be left in the luggage room before you go up.
- Wear comfortable shoes: a full visit easily means several kilometres on foot.
- Carry a light layer, because the air conditioning inside is strong even when it is hot outside.
- Note the name of the entrance or car park where you came in, to find your driver or taxi again.
- Keep receipts for larger purchases together for the VAT refund at the airport.
Mall of the Emirates and the other big malls
The Dubai Mall gets the headlines, but each of the other big malls has its own personality. Choosing the right one for your trip depends on where you are staying and what else you want to do that day.
Mall of the Emirates is the home of Ski Dubai, with real snow, a snow park and penguins, where the official FAQ indicates a temperature of around minus 2°C. Families often combine an hour on the snow with an afternoon of shopping. Dubai Hills Mall is a newer, more relaxed option in a residential area. Dubai Festival City sits on the waterfront, good for an evening stroll. Ibn Battuta Mall is themed, with areas inspired by the travels of the explorer Ibn Battuta, and is worth a look for the architecture alone. Dubai Outlet Mall, as the name says, is the place for outlet shopping.
In practice, most visitors only need two malls: The Dubai Mall for the classic experience and one other chosen by interest, Mall of the Emirates for the snow, Dubai Outlet Mall for bargains or Ibn Battuta Mall for something different. Trying to see them all turns a holiday into a marathon of car parks and escalators.
| Mall | Best known for | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| The Dubai Mall | More than 1,200 shops, Dubai Aquarium, entrance to the Burj Khalifa | First visits, brands, an evening with the fountain |
| Mall of the Emirates | Ski Dubai, with real snow and penguins | Families, combining shopping with snow |
| Dubai Hills Mall | A newer mall in a residential area | Calmer shopping |
| Dubai Festival City | Waterfront setting | Shopping with an evening stroll |
| Ibn Battuta Mall | Themed areas inspired by Ibn Battuta's travels | Architecture and a different atmosphere |
| Dubai Outlet Mall | Outlet shopping | Bargain hunters |

Open-air shopping: City Walk, Boxpark and La Mer
Between October and April, when the weather is pleasant, it is a shame to spend every afternoon indoors. Dubai has several open-air shopping districts that combine boutiques, cafés and restaurants with a walk.
City Walk is an outdoor district of shops and restaurants, with a relaxed, urban feel. Boxpark is built from shipping containers, with independent brands and casual food in an open-air setting. La Mer is a beachfront area by the sea, good for an end-of-day walk; check what is open before you go, as tenants and seasonal openings change.
In summer, from June to September, these areas are best left for the evening, or skipped in favour of the malls. In the cooler months, they are some of the nicest places in the city for an unhurried afternoon. Our guide to the best time to visit breaks down the weather month by month.
The souks: gold, spices and textiles in old Dubai
No list of where to shop in Dubai is complete without the souks. The Gold Souk and the Spice Souk are in Deira, in the Al Ras area by the Creek. The Textile Souk is across the water in Bur Dubai, close to Al Fahidi and the abra station. The traditional abra crossing between Bur Dubai and the Deira Old Souq costs AED 1 per person per trip, in cash, according to the RTA.
The experience is the opposite of the malls: narrow lanes, shopkeepers calling you in, the smell of saffron and frankincense and windows full of gold. Prices in the Gold Souk are based on the day's published gold rate plus a making charge, and the making charge is where you can negotiate.
We cover the souks in detail, with how gold pricing and carats work, in our Gold Souk and Spice Souk guide. The Dubai Creek and souks page has a quick summary of the abra routes.

Dubai Shopping Festival and the best time for sales
The Dubai Shopping Festival is the city's big retail event, with discounts, promotions, raffles and entertainment across malls and shopping districts. Its 31st edition ran from 5 December 2025 to 11 January 2026, and the festival takes place every year around the same time. Check the dates of the next edition on Visit Dubai before you book flights around it.
In summer, Dubai Summer Surprises plays a similar role: the 2025 edition ran from 27 June to 31 August. It is a good moment for bargains, but remember that June to September is the hottest part of the year, so most of your shopping will be indoors.
Outside these events, sales appear throughout the year in individual shops and malls. If shopping is a main reason for your trip, the December to January festival period, which also falls in the pleasant-weather season, is hard to beat.
How the tourist VAT refund works in Dubai
The UAE charges 5% VAT on most purchases. Tourists can reclaim part of it through the Planet system run with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). The process is digital and fairly simple, but it only works if you follow the steps at the time of purchase.
These are the main rules:
- Shop at a participating store: ask before you pay whether it takes part in the tax-free scheme.
- Spend at least AED 250 per receipt.
- Ask the shop to register the purchase digitally for tax free when you pay; have your passport with you.
- Validate your purchases at the airport before check-in or departure, keeping the goods and receipts at hand.
- Expect to receive back less than the full 5%, because the operator deducts its fees.
How High Class plans your shopping day
Shopping in Dubai is more pleasant with a plan and without carrying bags across car parks. On WhatsApp, we ask what you want to buy, who is coming and what else is on the day: an aquarium visit, the Burj Khalifa, the souks or a dinner in town.
We arrange a car with a driver who drops you at the right entrance and waits or comes back when you are ready, so bags go straight into the car. We can combine the malls with the old souks and an abra crossing, schedule the tower or Ski Dubai at the right time and, during the Shopping Festival, check the dates and events that matter for your trip. Opening hours and conditions change through the year, so we confirm everything for your date before planning the day.
If you are travelling from the UK, the US or India
- United Kingdom
- British visitors often find brand prices similar to home, so focus on what Dubai does differently: the souks, the scale of the malls and the Shopping Festival offers. Remember your UK customs allowances when you fly home, and keep VAT refund receipts together. Entry rules depend on your passport: confirm on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) and GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae).
- United States
- For American travellers, the souks and gold shopping are often the highlight, as is the sheer size of The Dubai Mall. Check US customs rules on what you bring back, especially jewellery and high-value items. Confirm your entry requirements on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) or GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae) before booking.
- India
- Gold shopping in Dubai is a long tradition for many Indian travellers; ask for a receipt showing carat, weight, price per gram and making charge. Check India's customs rules on how much gold you can bring home before you buy. Visa on arrival applies only to Indian passport holders with a valid visa or residence permit from the countries listed by the UAE government; otherwise arrange an e-visa. Always confirm on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) and GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae).
