Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

According to Visit Dubai, the DDCR covers 225 square kilometres, about five per cent of Dubai's land, and is fenced to shield its flora and fauna. Since preservation began in 2004 it has become home to more than 50 plant species, 120 birds and 43 mammals and reptiles. It lies on the Dubai-Al Ain Road.

Visits are made through Al Maha Desert Resort or specialist operators such as Arabian Adventures, Lama Tours, Platinum Heritage and Alpha Tours. The reserve explains that approved tours carry its seal, with DDCR-certified guides and a focus on nature and culture. Al Maha is the only resort offering overnight stays inside the reserve.

What to do in the reserve

  • Dune driving in a 4x4 along predefined routes to a Bedouin camp.
  • Wildlife drives, with a guide explaining desert ecology.
  • Camel treks, horse riding, falconry, archery and sand boarding.
  • Dune dinners, private desert dinners, camping or a hot air balloon ride.

Al Qudra Lakes

Within the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, Al Qudra is a cluster of man-made lakes in the Saih Al Salam desert, about 55 km from central Dubai on the D63, according to MOCCAE. No 4x4 is needed and there is no entry fee. An 86 km cycling track runs beside the lakes.

Visit Dubai puts the drive from Downtown at 30 to 45 minutes, with traffic and starting point making the difference, and suggests setting aside at least an hour.
