What the Burj Khalifa At the Top tour actually is

The Burj Khalifa is 828 metres tall, has 163 floors above ground and opened on 4 January 2010. Most visitors never see an office or an apartment inside it. What they come for is At the Top, the observation experience run from inside The Dubai Mall, which takes you up by high-speed lift to decks that look straight down on Downtown Dubai, the Sheikh Zayed Road towers and, on a clear day, the coastline and the desert beyond.

Calling it a tour is slightly misleading. On the standard ticket you are free to wander at your own pace once you reach the top, with no guide and no fixed route. Only the premium SKY experience adds a guided element. That freedom is lovely, but it also means the quality of your visit depends almost entirely on the ticket you pick and the time slot you book.

This guide compares the three ways to go up, explains how to time the sunset without paying for a slot that is mostly darkness, and covers the practical details people usually discover too late: where the entrance is, which bags are allowed and how long to budget. If you are still building the week, our 7-day Dubai and Abu Dhabi itinerary shows where the tower fits best.

At the Top, At the Top SKY or The Lounge: which ticket to choose

There are three levels of experience, and the right one depends less on height than on how much time, space and service you want once you are up there.

At the Top is the classic visit to levels 124 and 125, between roughly 452 and 456 metres. Level 124 includes the outdoor terrace, which is the part most people remember: open air, glass panels and the city spread out below. For a first visit with children, or for anyone who simply wants the view, it is more than enough.

At the Top SKY takes you to level 148, at about 555 metres, as well as levels 124 and 125. The official page describes a premium reception, the SKY lounge, a guided element and Arabic refreshments and snacks. You can spend up to 30 minutes on level 148 and then continue down to 124 and 125 for as long as you like. The real gain is calm: fewer people, less queuing and a more relaxed pace, which matters a great deal at sunset.

The Lounge sits even higher, across levels 152, 153 and 154, reaching about 585 metres, with a hospitality service. It suits a special occasion or travellers who want the highest point the public can reach in a lounge setting rather than on a busy deck.

Burj Khalifa at sunset: how to time it properly

Sunset is the slot everyone wants, and it is the one that sells out and costs the most. The official FAQ is clear that there is no specific sunset ticket. What it recommends instead is entering about 120 minutes before sunset, which gives you time to clear security, ride the lift, take in the city in daylight, watch the sun drop and stay for the lights coming on.

That two-hour window is the key. Book a slot that starts just as the sun is setting and you will spend it queuing for the lift, arriving to a dark sky. Book too early and you will be tempted to leave before the best part. Sunset times move by more than an hour across the year in Dubai, so check the time for your date before you choose the slot.

If sunset is sold out, do not force it. Early morning has clear air and far fewer people, and a slot after dark shows the city as a carpet of lights, with the fountain dancing below. Many travellers end up preferring the night view.

  • Check the sunset time for your exact date.
  • Book entry about two hours before it, as the official FAQ suggests.
  • Arrive at the mall earlier still, as the walk to the entrance takes longer than you expect.
  • Keep the evening free afterwards for the fountain and dinner nearby.

How long the visit takes and what it feels like up there

According to the official FAQ, At the Top takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes on average. On the SKY experience, you have up to 30 minutes on level 148 and then as long as you want on 124 and 125. In practice, allow about two hours from arriving at the entrance to leaving, and longer at peak times, when queues for security and the lifts build up.

The ride up is fast and smooth, and most people barely feel it beyond their ears popping. At the top, the decks are enclosed in glass, with the outdoor terrace on level 124 giving you fresh air and a less reflective view for photos. There is complimentary Wi-Fi, and photo kiosks if you want a printed souvenir.

Vertigo is less of an issue than people fear, because the glass walls are solid and you look out rather than straight down. Anyone who is nervous can stay back from the windows and still enjoy the panorama.

Where the entrance is and how to get there

You do not enter the tower from the street. The At the Top entrance is inside The Dubai Mall, on the Lower Ground floor, signposted 'At the Top, Burj Khalifa'. The mall is enormous, so give yourself at least 15 to 20 minutes from any car park or metro exit to reach it, more if you are with children or older relatives.

By metro, take the Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station and follow the signs into the mall. By car, the official advice is to park at The Dubai Mall in the Fashion Avenue car park. With a private driver, you can be dropped close to the right entrance and collected when you are done, which saves the hunt for parking at the busiest time of day.

Hours vary through the year: the official pages show closing times between about 8pm and 9pm on many days and later on some dates. They also change during Ramadan and on public holidays. Check the official calendar for your date before you plan the rest of the evening.

Rules for visitors: bags, food and photography

Security at the entrance is similar to an airport check, and a few rules catch people out. These are the main points from the official FAQ:

  • Handbags and purses are allowed; backpacks, shopping bags and strollers go to the luggage room near the entrance.
  • Outside food and drink are not permitted; there is a café on the ground level and another on level 124.
  • Laptops, tablets, e-cigarettes, aerosol cans and glass bottles are not allowed inside.
  • Professional photography is not permitted, so leave large rigs at the hotel.
  • The whole experience is wheelchair accessible.
  • The outdoor terrace may close in bad weather, and there are no refunds for weather.

Pairing the tower with the Dubai Fountain and dinner

The beauty of a Burj Khalifa visit is that the rest of the evening is right at its foot. The Dubai Fountain performs on Burj Lake every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm, with afternoon shows at 1pm and 1:30pm, or 2pm and 2:30pm on Fridays. Watching from the promenade is free. For a closer view, the paid Boardwalk brings you within about nine metres of the jets, and the Lake Ride takes you across the water in a traditional wooden abra.

A comfortable rhythm is: tower at sunset, down for one or two fountain shows, then dinner in Downtown. If you have a little more time, The Dubai Mall itself is worth a wander, and our guide to where to shop in Dubai explains how it compares with the city's other malls and souks.

If you would rather see the city from a different angle on another day, the Dubai Frame offers a lower, framed view of old and new Dubai, and the Burj Khalifa page has a short summary for quick reference.

How High Class plans your Burj Khalifa evening

We start with a simple question on WhatsApp: what matters most to you, the sunset, a quieter visit or the highest view? From there we suggest the experience that fits, At the Top, SKY or The Lounge, and check the official calendar for your date before anything is booked.

We secure tickets for the right time slot, plan your arrival around the roughly two-hour window the official FAQ recommends, and arrange a car with a driver to drop you close to the entrance and collect you after the fountain. If the group includes children or older travellers, we build in pauses and avoid the most crowded hour where we can. Hours, prices and availability change through the year, so we confirm everything for your date first.

If you are travelling from the UK, the US or India

United Kingdom
The UAE is 4 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 3 hours ahead during British Summer Time, so a sunset slot on your first or second evening is realistic. Half-term weeks and the Christmas holidays push demand for sunset tickets up, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. Entry rules depend on your passport: always confirm on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) and GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae) before you fly.
United States
With Dubai 8 or 9 hours ahead of the East Coast, many American travellers wake very early for the first few days. Use that: an early morning slot at the top is quiet and the air is often clearer. Save the sunset slot for later in the trip. Check your entry requirements on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) or GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae) before booking.
India
Dubai is only an hour and a half behind India, so there is no real jet lag and a sunset visit on arrival day can work. Diwali and the winter school holidays are peak periods for Indian visitors, so book sunset slots early. Visa on arrival applies only to Indian passport holders with a valid visa or residence permit from the countries listed by the UAE government; otherwise arrange an e-visa before travel. Always confirm the current rules on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) and GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae).
