The Dubai Mall: what to expect

The Dubai Mall is much more than a shopping centre. According to Visit Dubai, it has more than 1,200 shops and about 1.1 million square metres of total area, and inside you will find an aquarium, an ice rink, dozens of restaurants and the entrance to the Burj Khalifa. Outside, on Burj Lake, the Dubai Fountain performs every evening.

That size is both the attraction and the challenge. Walking from one end to the other takes time, the corridors look alike and it is easy to spend a whole day without seeing what you came for. The trick is to treat the mall as a destination with zones, decide your priorities in advance and plan the day around the fixed times: the Burj Khalifa slot and the evening fountain shows.

This guide explains how to get there, what to see inside, how to combine the mall with the Burj Khalifa and the fountain, and how the tourist VAT refund works. Opening times change on public holidays and during Ramadan, so check the official websites before you go.

If you are combining the mall with other sights in Downtown, our guide to the best views in Dubai compares the Burj Khalifa with other observation decks, and the 7-day Dubai and Abu Dhabi itinerary shows where a Downtown day fits into a full week.

How to get to The Dubai Mall: metro, taxi or car

By metro, take the Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station. From there, a long covered walkway, the Metro Link Bridge, connects the station to the mall; follow the signs, and allow some extra minutes for the walk.

By taxi or ride-hailing app, ask for The Dubai Mall and check which entrance you want, since the mall is large and drop-off points differ. If you are driving, the mall lists parking at P1 and Cinema Parking, among other areas; note where you parked, because the car parks are as big as the mall.

With a private driver, you can be dropped at the entrance closest to your first stop and picked up at the end of the evening, which helps a lot when you leave with shopping bags after the fountain. Our guide to a private driver in Dubai explains how that works.

What to see inside The Dubai Mall

Beyond the shops, these are the attractions that shape a visit. Tickets for the paid ones change by date and time, so check them on the official websites.

With children, the aquarium and the ice rink work well together in the morning or early afternoon, followed by a break before the evening. With older travellers, plan the day with fewer zones and more pauses: the distances inside the mall add up quickly, and a café stop between attractions makes a big difference.

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

The aquarium is the most famous sight inside the mall. Its main tank holds 10 million litres of water, and a 48-metre tunnel lets you walk underneath, with marine life swimming over your head. It is a highlight of any visit, whatever your age.

Tickets come in different combinations, so check what each one includes, such as the tunnel and the Underwater Zoo. It is a firm favourite with children and a good indoor option for the hottest hours of the day. Our guide to indoor things to do in Dubai has more ideas for summer or rainy days.

Dubai Ice Rink: skating in the desert

Skating in the middle of the desert is one of those Dubai contrasts that children remember. The Dubai Ice Rink, inside the mall, offers skating sessions, and you can watch from the levels above if not everyone wants to skate.

Bring socks and a light jacket, as the rink area is cool. Session times change, so check the schedule on the day. It is a good break between the aquarium and dinner, especially in summer, when outdoor plans are best left for the evening.

Burj Khalifa from The Dubai Mall: At the Top entrance

The entrance to At the Top Burj Khalifa is inside The Dubai Mall, on the Lower Ground floor; follow the signs that say "At the Top, Burj Khalifa". At the Top takes you to levels 124 and 125, about 452 to 456 metres high, including the outdoor terrace on level 124.

There is no specific sunset ticket. The official FAQ recommends entering about 120 minutes before sunset, and the visit takes about an hour and a half. Prices vary by time slot, with prime hours costing more, so book in advance and arrive at the mall early enough to walk to the entrance without rushing.

For a quieter, more exclusive visit, At the Top SKY goes up to level 148, about 555 metres high, and also includes levels 124 and 125. The official page describes a premium reception, the SKY lounge, a guided visit and Arabic drinks and snacks. On SKY you spend up to 30 minutes on level 148 and then explore 124 and 125 at your own pace.

Our Burj Khalifa At the Top guide explains the levels, the SKY option on level 148 and how to choose a time.

Dubai Fountain show times and where to watch

Right outside the mall, on Burj Lake, the Dubai Fountain sends jets of water dancing to music and light. Watching from the promenade around the lake is free. According to the official timetable, evening shows run every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm daily, and afternoon shows are at 1pm and 1:30pm, or 2pm and 2:30pm on Fridays.

For a closer view, there are two paid options: the Boardwalk, a floating walkway that brings you within 9 metres of the show, and the Lake Ride, a traditional abra on the lake. The lights look best after dark, so the classic order is the Burj Khalifa at sunset, then the fountain, then dinner.

For dinner with a view, Emaar lists Mausam in The Dubai Mall and Time Out Market Dubai at Souk Al Bahar, with its open-air terrace, among the options around the lake. Plan about an hour for two or three shows and a walk by the water, longer if you add dinner or the Boardwalk. On busy evenings, especially at weekends and during the Dubai Shopping Festival, the best spots on the promenade fill up early.

Shopping at The Dubai Mall: tips and the tourist VAT refund

The UAE charges 5% VAT, and tourists can claim part of it back through the Planet system, run with the Federal Tax Authority. The purchase must be at least AED 250 per invoice in a participating shop, and the receipt is registered digitally at the time of purchase. Before check-in at the airport, you validate the purchases; the amount returned is less than 5% because of the operator's fees.

If shopping is high on your list, our guide to the best places to shop in Dubai compares The Dubai Mall with other malls and souks, and the Dubai Shopping Festival, held every year around December and January, is worth checking on Visit Dubai.

  • Keep your passport or a copy with you to register purchases for the VAT refund.
  • Save the mall map on your phone and agree on a meeting point if the group splits up.
  • Plan the day by zones: aquarium and ice rink together, shopping in one wing, Burj Khalifa and fountain at the end.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: you will walk a lot more than you think, even if you only visit a few shops.
  • Keep the receipts and shopping bags together, so the airport validation of your VAT refund is quick.

How High Class organises your day at The Dubai Mall

We start on WhatsApp by asking what matters most to your group: shopping, the aquarium, the Burj Khalifa at sunset, dinner with a view of the fountain or all of it. Then we plan the order of the day around the fixed times, help with the bookings that need a time slot and suggest where to eat.

A car with a driver drops you at the right entrance and picks you up at the end of the evening, with space for shopping bags. For those who want company, we can arrange shopping accompaniment at The Dubai Mall. Opening times and ticket prices change, so we confirm everything for your date before booking.

If you are travelling from the UK, the US or India

United Kingdom
With 3 or 4 hours of time difference, an evening at the Burj Khalifa and the fountain works even on your first day. Compare prices with home before buying, and remember to validate VAT refund purchases at the airport before check-in. Check your entry requirements on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) and GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae) before you fly.
United States
With Dubai 8 or 9 hours ahead of the East Coast, the mall is a good first-day plan: indoors, air-conditioned and easy to leave when jet lag hits. Save the Burj Khalifa sunset slot for a day when you are rested. Check your entry requirements on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) or GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae) before booking.
India
Dubai is only an hour and a half behind India, so a long day at the mall works from the start. Diwali and the winter holidays are peak periods, and the Dubai Shopping Festival brings extra crowds. Visa on arrival applies only to Indian passport holders with a valid visa or residence permit from the countries listed by the UAE government; otherwise arrange an e-visa before travel. Always confirm the current rules on u.ae, ICP (icp.gov.ae) and GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae).
