According to the official website, the closure is temporary and is a chance to reimagine the museum from the ground up, with a new narrative, new exhibitions and labs, and a redesigned visitor journey. The current exhibitions will not return in their previous form. The reopening coincides with the museum's fifth anniversary: it was launched by the Dubai Future Foundation on 22 February 2022.
During this period the main exhibitions are not open to visitors. Some spaces may remain accessible for selected activities and services, the online retail store stays open, and tickets for the renewed museum will go on sale closer to the reopening.
The building
Designed by Killa Design, led by architect Shaun Killa, and engineered by Buro Happold, the museum has been named by National Geographic as one of the 14 most beautiful museums in the world.
- 77 metres tall, with an overall area of 30,548 m².
- A stainless steel facade of 1,024 pieces made with a robot-assisted process, covering 17,600 m².
- The green hill represents the earth, the torus represents humankind's ability to innovate and the central void represents the unknown.
- The calligraphy, designed by Emirati artist Mattar bin Lahej, also works as the building's glass windows.
